If you had the chance to talk with your younger self, what would you say to yourself? This is a commonly asked question by most people whether or not of how things are going in their lives. You could be a 50-something-year-old architect, with everything going well in your life – a great career, loving relationship, etc. You may even have a high self-confidence level. And yet, it is a question you will ask yourself.
So, what would you say to your younger self you feel they need to know to ensure a more secure future for your current person?
Relationships
- Don’t stay in a terrible relationship that only produces a few good times. Love is not what you think it is. You must love yourself to love others. Focus on really loving who you are to love someone else years from now.
- The only real relationship that is important is the one you have with yourself. If you don’t love yourself, you cannot truly love others.
- Realize that infatuation is not love. You may think you are in love with someone, but a genuine connection with someone is real love.
- Never settle for the sake of having sex. Sex will only get better, but stop trying to force it.
- Don’t be afraid of the feelings you have. Come out from your hiding spot and face the music. Allow your feelings to move through you and grasping to the past.
Health
- When you love yourself, be sure to feed yourself well because your life depends on the food you give it.
- Get in your exercise. It’s just as important as what you eat. Stop hating it; it’s something that you’ll end up loving it.
- Quit berating yourself for things you do not have or have failed at. Instead of bashing yourself, learn from the mistakes you have made. Remember, in the end, it doesn’t matter.
- Believe in more than just yourself. There is no reason to be religious but not believing in something higher than yourself is killing you spiritually. Open your heart and allow something more powerful to come inside.
- You define who you are, not other people. Be who you are and what to be, and stop listening to the negative things people are saying.
- The unexpected is going to happen, no matter how much control you wish you had. You will want to fight against all these things to have some semblance of control. When you allow life to happen, you may find the best things occur.
Friendship
- Real friends are ones that don’t mind who you really are. You don’t have to make any effort to be yourself. Quit making things so hard on yourself.
- Be grateful for the people who come into your life. They may be there for a reason, season or lifetime. You can’t force a person to stay in your life, so when it’s their time to leave, they’ll leave but leave you with fond memories and wisdom.
Career
- You can be anything you want, regardless of what other people think. If you want something bad enough, fight for it to make it happen. If you question what others think of you, you’ll learn who you really are and can become.
- Learn what your passion is and do it without any apologies. Your job may pay the bills, but if you’re not passionate about it, it’s not a career. Pay your bills and find what your passion is. Don’t make compromises, but be clear as to what you want.
Considerations
- Everybody is trying their best, including you. Even those who have wronged you are trying their best. Stop being so sensitive and let the pain go.
- Sometimes what you regard as bad luck is a disguise for good luck – for new beginnings to the endings you are faced with.
- Come up with a list of principles from the things you happen to learn from other people. There is so much power in the written word that you can develop your principles of life to follow and help you through your journey.
- Make sure you consider your future when deciding in the present, as every decision you make will have a tremendous impact on your future.
- The future is not set; it is what you make of it. There is no written stone tablet telling you which direction to go. If you abide by what you feel your future should be, you miss out on the way it could really be.
As you age, you learn a lot about life – things you wish your younger self would have known. If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would be some of the things you would say? And, would you change anything.
